Of course I’ve already combed through every detail of the schedule and used the ECCC app to favorite WAY more panels than I could feasibly attend. Some of the panels I’m most excited about are:
- More Than Just Black and White: Humanizing Heroes and Villains (Friday, 11:30am) - because of Michael Stackpole, who has tons of Star Wars novels to his credit (which I guess are now, sadly, no longer canon).
- Diversity, Representation, and the Changing Face of Mainstream Comics (Friday, 3:30pm) - because I’m hoping it gets heated and real in there.
- Being Non-Compliant (Friday, 5pm) - because of Kelly Sue DeConnick and all the other badasses on this panel. Great quotes will surely come from this room.
- Anthony Daniels: The Golden Droid (Saturday, 11am) - 6 million forms of communication!? Need I say more?
- Image Comics Presents: Your New Favorite Comics (Saturday, 11am) - Yep, that’s me being double-booked; it has happened a lot. Image is just killin’ it these days, and I love getting the scoop on what is next from the creator-owned juggernaut.
- And there are a slew of industry, legal, and business-focused panels I’m going to try to get to as well.
I’ve started gathering up some accessories for the trek..
...including some of my brand new camera add-ons (those cosplay pics are gonna sing better than ever!). I’ll be sporting the staff shirt, but gotta have my back-up, which’ll be my Slave I patent design tee. Those Batman socks from Christmas will come in handy. I’m catching up on my Sex Criminals reading and trying to figure out where to hang the SDCC exclusive GotG poster (a bit late, I know). What?! How’d my post-apocalyptic preparedness machete end up in this pic? I guess my zombie survival kit is sitting too close to my con survival kit. Gotta fix that.
If that image looked like a contrived still life, it is because that’s what it is. Here is a teaser of what I’ve really been spending most of my time on.
Like many of the rest of us here at Fanpup, I’m geeking out over the fact that Emerald City Comicon is less than a week away. The excitement is building and I am getting nervous and happy at the same time.
This year, it will be a very different experience for me, as I’ve finally chosen a professional field to go into - geek journalism and public relations. Normally, I wouldn't really mention this but it has actually affected my choices of the events and panels that I will be attending this year -- especially the latter.
My choice of panels was rounded down from the incredible amount there was (shout-out to the planning committee on the amazing selection this year), and I’ve finally narrowed it down to a few professional and a couple of fun ones, here are a few that I’m especially excited for:
How To Be a Nerd for a Living: Your Career in Nerd Culture (Saturday, Mar, 28th -- 11:50-12:40)
If it isn’t apparent to most people, I’m a complete nerd and embrace it 100%, and similarly to many of us, we want to “make it” in an industry that we are passionate about, and this is it for me. This panel will have a cast of nerds who have made a living out of it including (but not limited to) Karen Hallion (illustrator), Jaimie Cordero (Espionage Cosmetics) and Isaac Marion (Warm Bodies). Hearing about how they broke into the industry and what tips and tricks can help me do what I want to do peaked my interest when I saw this panel and I’m eagerly waiting to hear what they have to say.
Gigs and Careers in Fandom and Geek Culture (Saturday, Mar 28th -- 4:50-5:40 PM)
Like the How To Be a Nerd for a Living panel, this one delves into a similar area of working in the culture, but specifically getting into the fan industry from the perspective of women. While none of the names listed I actually recognize off the top of my head, I’m looking forward to a very instructive panel that can help me specifically as a woman in this industry.
Firefly with Gina Torres and Jewel Staite (Sunday, March 29th -- 2:00-2:50)
This is one of the fun panels I am really looking forward to sitting in on. I’m a huge Firefly & Serenity fan and I’m looking forward to getting some Firefly items signed by both ladies and hearing what they have to say about their time on the show. Originally, Morena Baccarin (Inara) was slated to be with Gina Torres but had to drop out at the last moment. Even so, I still think this will be a fabulous one to attend.
Along with these and a few other panels and events (like the Guardians of the Sexy Burlesque show), I think this is going to turn out to be a great year at ECCC and definitely one to write about.
P.S. Might I add I had the same problem as Casey and ended up double-booking myself at different times during the weekend. So, I'll be finding out how fast this geek journalist can run in bright red Harley Quinn boots around the convention center.
As far as panels go, I review each panel listed on the website and choose the ones that pique my interest. Some of the ones I plan on attending this year are:
· CBLDF Podcast live
· Diversity Representation and the Changing Face of Mainstream Comics
· Fight Club 2
· Cover Artist Confidential
· Marvel: From Black Vortex to Secret Wars
· How to Draw Your Imagination with Kim Jung Gi
· Stan Lee: An Hour With “The Man”
· DC Entertainment Master Class: Art History
This is the year I will finally pay to take a picture with Stan Lee. I’ve attended many of the same cons as Stan in the past, but couldn’t justify paying the amount he was asking. But since Skottie Young canceled, I have some leftover money to spend (what’s up, student loans?).
ECCC can’t come soon enough. It’s going to be another great show! Catch me on the con floor with my camera, comic-themed tee, and money that I can’t afford to spend. See you all there!
But first I am getting together the most important thing, the outfits!
I’m dusting off my boots and getting my costume in order, but also prepping for not one, but two, costume additions which I hope I can pull off at the last-minute. The only down side to doing cosplay for two days is the fact that I have to narrow down which geeky shirt will win for the one day I dress up as mild-mannered, regular me.
Can’t go wrong with Fanpup purple though…
I've got my Go-Pro for recording some footage for Fanpup, Just the Tips so Matt Fraction and Chip Zdarsky can sign it, snacks, cash, my Fanpup shirt, tons of business cards, and of course my badge!
Otherwise I’m incredibly excited about the events surrounding the con, like Guardians of the Sexy Burlesque Show, the Cinerama Series, and an Evening with John Barrowman. This is my fourth Emerald City Comicon, so I feel like an old pro now and I'm really excited to help others have a great first time experience at Emerald City!
