Pukeko Pictures, the creative partnership company from the leads at Weta Workshop, who animated for big movies such as Lord of the Rings, I, Robot, The Hobbit, Avatar, and District 9, will be teaming up with Heavy Metal magazine to produce an adaptation of this popular comic. They pan to animate the comic into a 30-minute pilot episode and pitch it to networks. Hopefully they will see the potential investment of letting these ladies grace the screens of fans everywhere.
Rat Queens stars Hannah, the snarky elven mage with a mouthing-off problem, Violet the quick-tempered, hard-hitting dwarf fighter, Dee the atheist human cultist, and Betty the Halfling with a taste for cocktails; all pretty kick-ass ladies with a penchant for causing trouble.
With D&D tropes, bad-ass blood and gore, and a dark comedic element that give female representation in comics a whole new dynamic, we love Rat Queens because these women are tough-as-nails, bitingly funny, but most importantly, intelligent, well-rounded, and intensely-feeling characters. This could lead to some pretty amazing things in the future, paving the way not only to do more comic shows but for more female led comic/sci-fi shows in general.
No word on when things will officially be in motion, but we hope it will be very soon! As Krelitz said after the announcement, "Rat Queens is a standout in the marketplace as a divining rod for fangirls, a market as yet untouched by most comics publishers. It is not only perfect for the TV space, but much needed." Obviously we couldn’t agree more!!
